The National Core Indicators-Aging and Disabilities (NCI-AD) project is a collaboration between ADvancing States, the Human Services Research Institute (HSRI), and participating states, including Virginia. The NCI-AD project helps states to make services for older adults and people with physical disabilities better.
The core indicators are measures used across states to learn about the outcomes of long term services and supports (LTSS) used by people with older adults and people with physical disabilities. Indicators cover key areas of concern including quality of life, community integration, and person-centered services.
The NCI-AD survey is known nationally as a very important source of information about the impact of LTSS on people’s quality of life. The information is collected by surveying older adults and people with physical disabilities about their satisfaction with the services they receive and their overall quality of life.
In Virginia, the Department of Medical Assistance Services (DMAS) leads the initiative and collaborates with the Partnership for People with Disabilities at Virginia Commonwealth University to complete 2000 surveys each year.
The DMAS can use information collected to improve services for people by:
- Identifying gaps in services,
- Implementing programmatic changes,
- Comparing Virginia’s information to other states,
- Determining areas for quality improvement,
- Monitoring performance of Managed Care Organizations,
- Informing policy making, and
- Enhancing the overall quality of LTSS services and people’s experiences.
